2 years ago, I could have bought a large stack of stereoscopic photos, and probably for not a lot of $$. Didn't buy them, as I didn't have a viewer...
Just goes to show, it is always good to practise your finger crossing skills. I was going by the boring building, something Dutch architects used to excell at. That seals the deal, Queen Wilhelmina and her mother Emma, but you already found it. I doubt Emma was still regent for Wilhelmina, Wilhelmina became queen when she turned 18. In the photos Wilhelmina has her hair up, so she wasn't the young princess anymore, she was queen imo.
If the photo were taken during their visit to Kampen, then she was 15. But I still need to check the photo again for the name on the building, as that might help finding the right location (and date)
And that's the answer to the question regarding the who, where, when of these photos As these turn out to have been taken in Amsterdam, during the inauguration day (6 September 1898) Not sure if this one was also taken on that day, but the card has the same layout as the other 3 Any idea which play this could be?
That makes sense, given Wilhelmina's hairstyle and the fashion of the day. Something Classical. If it is from the same series, it could have been written for the occasion.
It looks like Antigone with the chorus, page and king Creon. I only think that because I was the page for my GCSE performance in drama.
I googled it and first suggestion was indeed Antigone. "On September 6, 1898, Dutch citizens celebrated the inauguration of Queen Wilhelmina. To mark this historic day, a grand classical Greek tragedy was performed in the Netherlands. The celebrated Dutch translation of Sophocles' Antigone by the poet P.C. Boutens was staged, accompanied by the dramatic choral music of composer Alphons". I tried again and it then suggested that the play was Ajax. Third and final atempt it stated that there is no record of any specific classical play "While there wasn't a specific classical play performed for the inauguration ceremony, the cultural and theatrical centerpiece of Amsterdam at the time was inherently tied to the classic works of Joost van den Vondel." Very odd!
90 photos weren't enough... So I've added 95 to the collection With photos taken in the UK, US, Palestine, Japan and a few other countries
As I didn't have enough photos already... Added around 70 more to the collection Including photos from WWI A few examples But also photos from various countries
I inherited the "Edinburgh University Stereoscopic Anatomy" series. I think it was originally a 10-volume boxed set first published in the early 1900's. It's in storage right now, so I don't know how many of the 10 volumes I have. 7 or 8, I think. I'd really like to find these a new home. I used to wonder what all the hype was about stereo views, including the View Masters that were around when I was a kid. I think I was about 12 when I finally figured out that it takes TWO eyes to make it work. Well, phooey.
