    This compact has patent number that I was able to date to 1930's.
    However it also has Cartier and some other markings that I couldn't identify.
    If someone can help me with hallmarks I would appreciate it.

    Thanks

    No hallmark

    The 516 is probably just a product number

    What do you mean no hallmark? There is a Cartier hallmark. I'm trying to establish if Cartier hallmark is real.

    Cartier is not a hallmark. Terry is correct, there is no hallmark, and the 516 mark is probably a product code.
    A hallmark is an official mark stamped by an assay office. A hallmark includes an indication of the silver fineness. It looks like your compact has a sterling fineness mark, the mark to the right of Cartier in the last picture.

    This is the Cartier mark I know, script in italics.

    I have my doubts because the Cartier mark is not the usual mark, also fuzzy and irregular:

    Yes the squiggles are the 516. I saw G1G at first, but terry's 516 is probably right.

    That's probably right. I did look at some liveauctioneer auctions for Cartier compacts that had block letters as opposed to script however there is no guarantee they were genuine.

    Hi,
    I have my misgivings as to the Cartier mark and the 516. Cartier has always marked their name on things but I have never seen such 'shakey" marks as on this compact.

    There are numerous similar cartier marks on compacts online

    I can understand the confusion, I've seen the following in print: "Hallmarked: Reed and Barton" ... that kind of thing. Not correct, but you do see it. Good to point out the difference though.

    As for this piece, Lenny, certainly do your research, but just glancing at it from photos, does not seem to have the upper end construction one would expect from Cartier. And another red flag as mentioned, I can't imagine you would have kind of a blurry stamp mark from that company-- the way the "C" is sort of shaky. A high end company like Cartier, I'd expect a perfect signature. Just observations from the photos.

    After I saw G1G, I thought Devanagari or another Asian script could be a possibility.:hilarious:
    Probably my Asian bias.:oops::confused:

    In the fourth photo, bottom rim, all the way to the left, it appears to read "sterling."

    Would that be considered a proper hallmark?

    lloyd249 it's not hoarding if it's valuable

    and the sterling is not the same rough engraved font , nor any other number or letters , all stamped, imo this is a made to deceive case , a revlon sterling silver with a forged cartier , forged with an engraving tool (i own one ) look in the letters and you can see the ridges the tool left( especially in the numbers) , little round nubs so to speak and pushed out silver ,crooked lettering ,definitely not stamped the way it should be .

    Agree, there is a sterling mark. But that is a fineness mark, not a hallmark.
    A hallmark is always an official mark, and is recognizable as such. 'Hall' comes from the old guild halls.
    In many countries precious metals are tested and weighed in an assay office and are stamped by those offices. Anyone can put a 'sterling' mark on any kind of metal, but only assay offices are allowed to punch hallmarks.

    No not a Hallmark.

    Sidebar....I was told once that only a registered jeweler could stamp 925 on silver...
    Does this have any basis in fact???

    @Any Jewelry - Thank you.
    Now to hope I can remember...

    @komokwa - I get left and right confused all the time when getting/giving directions. Apparently I do it here too.
