It is a version of the Shou character, for longevity.</p><p><br /></p><p>I agree, the netsuke represents Daruma, the monk who introduced Buddhism to Japan. But it is missing its face with bulging eyes, which was probably beautifully carved ivory inlay, with possibly lacquer or inked highlights. The eyes could have been of the rolling type.</p><p>So now it is essentially Daruma&#039;s robe, minus Daruma himself.
