    Good guess!
    I'd say it was fused to a T-shirt, maybe a ball cap.
    I think there were quite a lot of such things then.

    I don't doubt backpacks, for kids to carry books and whatnot, were unlikely but we had ball caps in the navy and baseball players wore them too so...

    well around here anyways...we didn't use backpacks for school like they foist on the kids nowadays......and ball caps were for baseball....kids didn't wear em...

    Well, 7" tall and 4 1/2" wide would be a BIT large for a ball cap I would think:joyful:!!!!!
