I have no issue separating art from the artist. In the mid 30s the world didn't know about the slaughters in the camps. Just a year or two earlier of Dali's remarks, Hitler was Man of the Year.

I was a Dixie Chicks fan when the shit hit the fan for them. I was also at Toby Keith's Annapolis show where he first performed Courtesy of the Red White and Blue, just him and guitar. It was beautiful. The next time I saw him, it was performed with a full band. Which wasn't as good as his acoustic version. The following time (the last time I saw him) the song ended with tacky pyrotechnics and massive flag waving. While the Chicks continued concentrating on making excellent music, Keith was recording crap and releasing it. In the end, art wins.

If every controversial artist had their art destroyed, there'd be no art.

There would still be art, but not as much as now. Some excellent artists were nice people.
For instance, in 'my own' country men like Vermeer and Escher were nice, as were just about all women artists.
I'm sure many other male artists were nice too. Rembrandt wasn't, but he was a genius.
