Color me surprised , NOT . Ive long suspected the art market had changed for the worse , Keith Haring comes to mind ! Talk about overrated schlock , so much I see is just that . In my humble opinion , but perhaps Im not evolved enough to see a canvas painted black and call it a masterpiece .

Kazimir Malevich Black Square.... Seriously?! Just would like to know the 2nd person who said it is ingeniously! The 2nd one, because I know the 1st one: Kazimir Malevich.... :cyclops:

I found this particularly interesting .....

"There are people who are not interested in a work until it hits $1 million.” Ridiculous as it sounds, he says, seven-figure sales “inspire people.”

I should be so lucky.

Ruskin, the Victorian art critic, said words to the effect that people who equate price with quality are fair game for those who charge too much for their work.

This kind of thing has been going for on as long as some people have been wealthier than others, which is to say forever. "The Emperor's New Clothes" was published in 1837 and mocks fashionistas.

On the other hand. a saying that came out of Germany in the '30s was "technique is cheap". You can teach technique and anyone who is not a moron can learn it, if they so desire. I'm a sucker for technique, but I know there is more to art.

Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis was known in the '80s as Princess TNT. She and her husband, Prince Johannes (30 some-odd-years older), were quite a number.

The whole price debate and the "this is art, THAT isn't" -thing I'm so over.

I'm only going to say, overall, ever when it comes to this subject:

The art world has gotten rather lazy.

I visited a not-so-high-end gallery that showcases local new-ish-comer artists work recently and there was a 'painting' that was a black dot in the middle of the paper. How original..
Also a lot of the "random paint stains wiped onto the canvas" type.
So I think a lot of the art these days is made by business-people who are ripping everyone off, trying to make something that isn't much anything into something great and grand. OF COURSE you can see art in anything and everything and explain this and that about a toilet brush. But do you want to pay a lot for it?
A lot of the contemporary art today is plain boring and dry and so lazy that there are only a few fancy words to it.

    The artists have gotten lazy.

The days of painting night and day to support yourself are over.. these days a well-off 30-something hipster right out of art school paints two brush-strokes on a canvas and it's a 3000$ piece of art. Easy and quick, no effort or real inspiration required.

There seem to be two ways these days: the one I just mentioned and then the "I'm bragging online about how realistic images I can draw" -artists.
Both are uninspiring and bland as an unripe pear. If the techniques are there, 99,9% of the time that's all there is (art-teacher syndrome as I call it.. Those who can't do, teach.)

This is one of the most difficult subjects.. If a piece of art is cheap, does that mean it's not special or beautiful enough to be desired?
If a piece of art is expensive, does it mean it's become merely a symbol of status?

Why do we have to define "art"? Is it the human consciousness trying to put a frame on its idea of worth vs. plain beauty?

I hope you enjoyed my pseudo-philosophical rant.

I saw that same type of article awhile back and bookmarked it. I always say I'll never be a "real" artist because I can't hype.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

I liked your rant very much, Mr. Blue.
    I like this thread.
I'm finding a lot of reassurance and peace in it. Like it's okay that I do what I do, artistically. And it's okay if I kinda find my own level, like water. That's the best I can word-ize it.

You can be a real artist without hype, but you'll never be a great one.

If I don't like it I don't buy it. I really do not care for any other opinon. And I don't have enough spare money to like anything expensive sothe art world will have no interest in me, as I haveno interest in the crazy world of modern art.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

I once painted a picture in grade school (tempera paints) and I was feeling grown up and sophisticated, and painted an abstract. The teacher gave me an F and said that wasn't Art. I cried and threw up and got sent to the Nurse, who let me lie down until it was bus-time home. There's a lesson in there someplace...

I think the lesson there was that your teacher sucked - big time...

"sucked" barley covers it i would have put in a few more words that don't quite fit here ,with that said, i had an art teacher in high school that made us do weird art so i skipped regularly ,i quit hi early (9) and went back a few years later and was visiting the old teacher and she was saying to the class how good i was as an artist and how well i did in her class , i was thinking she must have me confused me with someone else lol and asked her but she said she remembers .... i don't
