    My father, a physician, was stationed in Japan during the occupation after the war (my mother and my young brother accompanied him). They purchased a similar, though somewhat more elaborate camphor chest at the PX. My understanding is that it was made in China. I have seen similar chests over the years since then. They seem to have been a popular export.

    That carving looks very much likesome on a jewelry box my dad got mom in Vietnam. That would make a great coffee table !

    We used to get a lot of these Chinese camphor chests here as well, but few were as nice as this one.These glass topped ones were often used as coffee tables.
    It is missing its lock, which is often the case, so no real problem. But if you want the complete look, you can find a replacement on ebay, but make sure you get the right size. Look for 'Chinese brass lock'.

    A lot of these came out of Singapore.
