Thoughts on this small Impressionist-style painting?

Just a little 8" x 10" on board. Came from an estate in Detroit. I can't tell if it's an amateur's attempt or a maybe a study for a larger painting by a trained artist. On the edges you can see where the blue was once very vivid and bright....kind of dulled now. Thickly painted, tiny bit of impasto.

Thanks! Just old varnish, probably. It's pretty heavily varnished.

In my humble opinion its better than a "sunday" painter. Id love to see it cleaned, but I know how expensive that is. I like it too.

I like this. I don't think it's amateur. Amateurs lack the confidence and ability to apply paint like that and still have it make sense.

Agree with the others. Too bad it is unsigned.

Thanks guys. It has several of the characteristics of the work of William Greason, who lived in Detroit and established a painting school there. Could be a study by him or one of his followers, I suppose.

Eh, not really much info I've found out. But can you see any similarities to this painting by Greason? Not like mine would be worth a lot of money or anything even if it is by him, It's just interesting to me.

    How so?

Not a terribly attractive daub, but it does have some method. Beyond that, who can say?
