Ceramics are my main interest but I’ve been buying and selling a little glass lately.

I found this at the car boot sale today and bought it because it is a very impressive piece standing over 19cm tall and weighing 457 grammes. The top dimension is 11cm and the glass itself is about 2mm thick.

I am sure that it is hand blown.

There is a pontil mark and wear to the foot and the bowl is faintly fluted (very difficult to photograph). The stem has a similar slight twist.

Any thought on its age and origin?

Is that a safety rim edge? Does the glass look greyish? Hollow stem, yes?

Does look like a safety rim.

The glass is not particularly greyish. I’m not certain if stem is hollow but my best guess is yes. I’m not sure what a safety rim is but it has a nice solid almost “doubled up” feel to the rim.

Typically, a thick lip is the sign of an inexpensive glass.

Safety rims were introduced in the twentieth century. It’s like a rolled edge. I’d agree that on more recent glass, mid twentieth century say, a thicker bowl and edge means less expensive, but that’s not the case with older Victorian and Georgian glass: I’ve some lovely ones which are surprisingly chunky.

gut feel is this is twenties or thirties does Georgian air stem.

It's certainly a pretty thing with that graceful stem.

Yes, because of both the shape and the scale.
