Time period, style of desk?

    It may well serve your purpose very well then. You can't buy anything new as good for the money. Make a reasonable offer.

    The base would make a good side storage, but as Brad said it will be short. I think it is missing at least 4-6" in height.

    Personally, I think for the money (that they are asking) you could probably do better. Depending of course on where you are located. If near a big city you should be able to find a lot to choose from.
    Brown furniture is not popular at the moment.

    Editing this to say, if you can get the price down considerably - go for it.
