Hmm... "meh" = "yeah, I suppose so, but I really don't care" (perhaps with a touch of disdain)

Where was the tintype in the originating post acquired? I mean which country, which state? It makes a difference.

For a complete breakdown of the Billy the Kid tintype, his clothes and artifacts, see my article in Wild West Magazine, August 2012 issue.

I found a Russian photo in downtown Montreal.

I don't understand how where the OP's photo was found is any indication of where it originated......unless it was found in the photographers office in a file drawer that stated " I took this photo in the back room right here" !....???

There are many of ways of identifying a 19th century photograph. Tintypes are hardest to identify because the materials with which they are made are not distinguishable from each other -- there were several manufacturers of iron sheets and they all look the same -- but there are still ways, which I am not disposed to share at the present time.

We'll just have to wait until you're ready....or write an article on the subject.

But it occurs to me , with all the old photo's that show up here, that telling us you have ways of identifying them, but are reluctant to share that information , kinda of runs contrary to the spirit of this site where folks go out of they're way to share their knowledge & help others !

But hey pal, that's just me !! :p

    or is it....;)

I'm not your pal. And since you have questioned the validity of my first question, I'm not disposed to share what I know. I don't have to prove anything to you.

Collectors! You collectors always think that owning an artifact makes you an expert on it. I can't contribute anything accurate or helpful unless I work with the thing and I don't post guesses. Photography was a science as well as an art before tintypes were invented. I suggest you study 19th century photochemistry / photo technology / photo manufacturing and practice the craft of making the images as they did at the time. There are many articles on the subject in professional journals and newsletters, dating back over a 150 years. Learn.
