Hmmm. Perhaps they were sold to a school/college that didn't want to give students the capability to adjust for liability reasons.

hummm...maybe over the years...with constant use...that ' Y ' shaped handle had spread just enough to no longer lock into the slots...thus when sat on the chair would slip to the bottom rung..????

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

From what I could see on the above link from @KikoBlueEyes, the ones he is making are all a FIXED height, with no adjust-ability.............

Drafting chairs are very handy for use at high counters and tables. Drafting chairs have options with three lever mechanisms, so you are able to fully adjust the chair to a perfect seating position to suit personal preference.

1 The pin is to stop you pulling the seat out of chair base. The seat is at it's maximum height in the photo.
2 The lever locks the seat at the selected height into the outer tube with the slots.
3 The frilly bit is centralising the out tube so the the locking lever will fuction correctly.

I think it is a two-person job, and it is also stiff, which the WD40 should help to remedy.

    Good luck.

Strangely I saw one of these exact chairs in a used shop a few days ago, and the first action that was tried in the original pics (grasping like a bicycle brake) is the correct action to adjust the height. It worked easily on the one I tried.
