If they are, as I suspect, shepherdesses, they are for flicking at their sheep.

    Thank you.

In other news, I have spent entirely too long on this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bagpipes

Currently think the one that comes closest to the one in the painting is the Swedish Säckpipa. :wideyed:

But there are so so so many bagpipes I haven't looked at. :hilarious:

I am going to send them an email with the pics and see where it goes. Thank you so much for your help. I’ll post whatever response I get.

Just heard a BBC World Service news tidbit say that a painting hanging in the Paris apartment of an elderly woman is thought to be a lost work by an artist whose name I thought was pronounced cheem-AH-bway pronounced as cheem-a-BOO-ee by presenter. Cimabue, anyone?

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Hi @Jeanette Torello & @Bronwen, don't know if this helps clarify the images any, but I find "Topaz Gigapixel AI" sometimes does......the guy towards the background playing the 'flute'(?) with the bag against his chest has an awfully pointy ear!!!!

Thank you. It did make the men a bit more “there” and you can see the second goat much better! It’s early right now, I may see more as I wake up. ;^)

To everyone involved in this thread, I must get some work done today, so, unlike yesterday's obsessive compulsive deep dive down multiple rabbit holes, today I won't be doing too much merchant marks/sign of four/bagpipe reading, but I hope all of you will.:joyful:

Plus, I was hoping @Any Jewelry might have some thoughts on the piece. Because I just generally hope that.:joyful:

Lol, thank you for all your help yesterday. I didn’t mean for you, or anyone, to get obsessed, but I can understand and appreciate it. Im going to write to the Historians of Netherlandish Art and see what they have to say. I’ll keep everyone posted.

Check WorldCat for a copy of the book near you (closest one to me is 220 miles!)... or see if anyone still does interlibrary loans.
