Hello again. I found this belt buckle with this big- but alas, broken- piece of turquoise.

I confess to near total ignorance here and ask for your opinions on age, the impact to value being broken makes, if you think it's Navajo, or any other observations.

    Thanks everybody!

Here's a close up of the metal work and another of the back that better shows how it's indented beneath the stone.

And now that I'm thinking of it, is a belt buckle jewelry? Maybe I should have posted in the tribal forum... oh well!

https://forum.turquoisepeople.com/ as well may have some knowledge.

I love the look of your buckle. It strikes me as an older Navajo piece possibly made by a beginner smithy. I like the conch style (pounded rounded center).

Do you think it's sterling? Kinda looks like nickel or something else?

Yes, I'd think it was sterling silver, though obviously not marked. It's hard to get a really accurate picture of its color, but it looks like silver here in person.

We're other metals used in Southwest jewelry?

Each mine can have variable colors and patterns which look similar to other mines. The only real way to know which mine turquoise comes from is to buy from the mine. examples..... https://waddellgallery.com/pages/turquoise-materials
