At a recent auction we bought several pieces of interesting pottery including an anti slavery jug, a della robbia charger, a clews & co chameleon ware vase and an 1847 Naomi and her daughters in law jug. As most of the auction was from a single house clearance we are keen not to miss any other pottery gems and we have three pieces that we would like help with.

The second vase is this beauty. Approx 9" tall, with blue and purple glaze against a brown background.

No makers marks, but there looks to be 4 impressed numbers to base 98??

I'm guessing this is 20th century but would appreciate any thoughts on who might have potted this.

My first thought was Belgian but that dark reddish brown clay is throwing me. Maybe French or, possibly, Japanese. I can't think of any American companies this fits to.

Think the clay color is wrong for Pierefonds but was also thinking along those lines. Think we can probably rule out Denbac and Metenier as well. The way the inside of the lip is scooped out is pretty distinctive and not typical of most potteries. You do see it on some Belgian pieces which is why my thoughts initially went that direction. The clay color is what is really throwing me.

What date do you think this is?

Are there some nouveau hints in the styling, in which case maybe early 20thC?

Think the earliest it would be is early 20th century. Could be significantly later if Belgian, for example. They made similar things even post WWII. If French or American, would think pre-war.

The shape in Nouveau, but not the glaze. The base actually looks West German to me.

Bear/Brad, please would you describe the glaze effect. Is it crystalline?

I'd say crystalline. I've some Dutch pieces like that.
