Seeing that second rug with similar construction makes me think Mexico Possibly Zapotec) as a source based on that pattern.

As to the rugs, I'd agree that the one with fringe is most likely a Mexican copy of a Middle Eastern rug. The other appears to be a Navajo Crystal.

I found one with the same pattern, retail $500 at "Chairish" (I couldn't find any thing Middle Eastern that matched up...
    Blue Oaxaca Wool Rug - 4′ × 6′
But it is not much of a match in quality - it's having a tough time laying(?) flat (Machine washable??). This piece is very nice quality... Any opinions or advice on how to date it?

(Even thought I'm a bit daunted by rugs... I do love them. And who knew a person could grow up to be rug professor???)

    Thanks! :) bump

Second rug is "inspired" by storm pattern motif and probably dates 1930-50 era. If clean and no damage figure $650-$1,000. insurance range value.

    One last try-try?

I'm uncertain how to date the first rug? It doesn't look commercial, as the blue comparable I found does. I really have no idea, it just "looks" older and better quality to me.

I'm going with Zapotek, since I never located any Middle Eastern rugs that didn't have some kind of pile/heavier fringe.
