The holes look large for pepper. Are you sure they're not for salt?

Since you've got 2 boys instead of a boy & girl, maybe you can sell them with teaser 'gay interest'. See it done occasionally with certain cameos.

Looks like a Goebel Bee in a V. Although I've never seen a mark looked so blurry.

They are NOT Hummels, but possibly made by Goebel.

Search the images Bronwen linked to see if any are ID'd as Goebels.

As I recall, at least as many were described as Goebels as Hummel & did not think the ones that said Hummel really looked it. Probably Goebels & Japanese knock offs of Goebels.

Neither salt nor pepper in German.

I noticed the black squiggles & thought it might be writing. Was pretty sure you would come along & do the photo work. :)

Names of the painters? Either I'm misreading some letters, or they don't quite make phonetic sense. Former is more likely.

No. Looking again, think both are by same hand & both 'words' end with the same 5 letters. Only the L & A differentiate them.

Considering that they are 2 of the same figure, surprising there is any difference at all in how they're marked.

What is confusing to many people is that Hummels were made by Goebel.

Goebel made many other items also.

Berta Hummel designed the figures and Goebel made them.

Most every Hummel figurine is marked Hummel, unless it's too small to do so.

Promising train of thought. Just realized both of OP's say the same thing, it's just that some black got lost on one. Luzern, I think.
