Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

I played with the image a bit & you can see a LITTLE bit better what's going on...... I'm not sure that's a woman, but in any case seems to be holding a stemmed flower in his/her teeth?, the guy with the Mexican hat in front of him seems to be holding out a glass, the guy holding the champagne bottles seems like he might be wearing a fez? and I think as you said- a monocle?, and yes, it's all kind of crazy!!!!

If this wasn’t dated, and a location stated, I’d guess it to be a equator crossing of ‘pollywogs’. ;)

    Hi,
I do not think the "woman" has a flower in "her" teeth but it is part of the shoulder epaulet of the officer standing behind "her".

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Thanks for doing that! It's a little clearer now.

Thanks for that information! I guess the "shakedown cruise" in this case lasted more than six months?

Thanks to all of you for helping with this. I have a better idea of historical context. I guess the other thing I might do is to research Pierson, just for fun.

I just found this article that indicated that Pierson was among a number of sailors who may have been chosen by Harry Stinemetts, a designer of naval covers, to receive some of his designs and use them. It says that Stinemetts may have chosen "certain individuals who were very interested in naval philately" ... "to service his covers." This is in the lower right column on page 12:

Yes it can especially if there are issues. There may or may not be shipyard folks aboard as well.
It is said, I'm not sure if still true, that whoever works on the hull of a submarine gets to go for the first ride. ;)

I'm 99% sure that is not a woman, but a man in costume. Skits like this were and somewhat still are common.

I don't think the person who sent the letter has anything to do with the photo. I think someone did what I've been known to do - stick a photo into any convenient envelope. I also think the envelope could have collectors interest due to the military address. Too bad they wrote on the back, but that may not affect the sale price. I'd see them as two totally separate items that just happened to be together.

I had no idea of what to say, since I didn't understand the reference. :)

Sailors who cross the Equator for the first time are pollywogs.
What is going on in this photo could easily have been one of those events.

I suppose it wouldn't be impossible that they, or weather, delayed the event and they did it here.

There are others for the Panama Canal, time zone and arctic circle. Ceremonies for each and certificates.

This is from the internet, but hubby has several for his 'around the world' cruise (to Southeast Asia) and then his Iceland service. He has the Shellback, too.

The USS Warrington in convoy went through the "ditch" on her way to Vietnam. Jon filmed the entire trip on Super 8. He had it put on a VCR tape awhile back and then finally on a CD. No sound. The ship hit ordnance and was damaged. The Navy took a portion of the tape from just before and after. Then he filmed being towed to the Philippines by their anchor chain where the ship sat in drydock for four months before finally being decommissioned.
