    I'd be grateful if anyone were able to suggest the origin and possible age of this unusual ebony/ebonised African carving.

    I think it's called a family tree. Possibly Makonde?

    Yes it is Makonde. I know this type as 'ujamaa', which means togetherness.

    Aha ! Southeast Tanzania, Northern Mozambique or Kenya - according to Google.

    Stift, these ujamaa carvings became popular after Tanzania's president Julius Nyerere introduced the Ujamaa concept of tradition-based African Socialism. Ujamaa carvings have been made ever since.
    Yours is not top quality, but the story behind it is interesting.
