I have searched high and low for a brooch like this on the internet and have come up with precisely zero. I could really do with some search terms please or leads as to what I am looking for!
    I’ve tried glass vial/tube/mourning/religious.
It’s a decent size brooch and although it’s just pot metal, all those gems are properly set not glued in.
May pestilence rain down on the savage who replaced the clasp:shifty:
There is part of a word visible and some numbers but partly obscured by gallons of solder. Any ideas please?
Clasp experts, what date do the remains of that hinge and clasp tell me please?
    Thankyou lovely people :)

Can honestly say I've never seen anything similar. I'm almost wondering if it is an unusual form for a mourning brooch --putting hair inside the tube, since they left it clear. Does it open on both ends? Most potion vials are closed on one end, maybe suggests hair or some kind of scroll?

How unusual! Will be following this post to see if anyone comes up with an answer! Cool piece.

Only one end appears to unscrew but I didn’t put much pressure on the other end as I didn’t want to break it. I have looked with a loupe to see if the other end is sealed glass and it does appear to be.
Hmm, maybe perfume?. Very fiddly to fill and use though and always the potential for it to leak. Although a perfumy cleavage wouldn’t be the worst that could happen!
Off to google the perfume possibility.

If it only opens on the one end, then could be something like perfume. What a cool mystery piece! Let's see if anyone else has thoughts. :)

Lucille, I think you have got me on the right track:kiss:
Same pat number, so now at least we know it’s German. Theirs has a little piece of cork to avoid leakage.

A veddy fawncy etui. For needles. Victorian nannies were perfumed with soap, lavendar water, and occasionally mint.

The pin, or a Veddy Proper Nanny? I think I ran into a nanny goat once, but that's about it. :cat::chicken::panda:

Could it possibly have held smelling salts?

Neither have I, not that that means much as I’m still in jewellery kindergarten. I couldn’t leave it in the charity shop could I?!

I read fainting as farting, which is appropriate.

Now if I could just find interesting AND valuable I’d be sorted!. I love it when I find something that is a bit of a mystery although there is always that frustration when you hit a dead end.
