Hello all! I don't usual pick items like this up, but sometimes I'm intrigued by the quirky. This small pot is 5"H x 3.5"W. I feel like it has some age but it's totally out of my realm of knowledge. Can you help with possible age, what it was used for and origin? Any and all info appreciated- even if you break it to me that it's modern or a student class project :shame:. Thank you!

I thought so too! I just watched a short video on Figian pottery on YouTube that is traditionally made by woman (thanks to @Marote for the possible lead!). If it is Figian or similar, the techniques have been the same for over a thousand years so perhaps hard to date.

The significance of the spiders will be good to hear...an' if it ain't old, I for one would be surprised. Great find...I'd have gabbed it too!

Can you tell us where you are located / where you found it? If North America, it resembles some Navajo pine pitch glazed pottery.

I'm in Alberta, Canada. I got the pot from an auction house in Ontario.

Spider Woman is an important figure in Navajo mythology, although I am not convinced it is spiders on your jar - difficult to see, but do they all have 8 legs?

I'm not sure they are meant to be spiders, they only have round 'bodies', no heads. They could be flowers or sun symbols.
The double spouted one on the second photo Marote posted (no link?!) shows the same shape but it looks more like a flower, with petals.

Top "spider" has 10 appendages. That could indeed be 8 legs and 2 pedipalps
But the other seems to have 9. Unfortunate encounter with a bird that took one leg off? Or only counting 9 due to the angle/light? (as in the first photo I only count 8)

Yes, I believe you are correct! I only counted 8 legs on one and assumed that they were spiders (as did the auction listing lol) but there are definitely others with 9 and 10.
