Hi Spring,

Thank you for bring up a sore spot and rubbing salt into it. In the 1970s I found a paper cut out and framed work of art. It was thrown out of a wonderful old apartment building in NY which had a fire. It was a blue nude and signed Matisse. I had for two or three weeks and a friend of a friend was visiting and saw the thing. She got very excitied and was telling me me it was an original Matisse. I never put the paper cut out as to THE Matisse. She got me very nervous and very greedy. She and I went to her work she worked at a small gallery on 57th Street. Her boss got very quiet but was showing excitement because his fingers were doing air piano all over his desk. He wrote me out a reciept for the piece. Two days later he called and told me the bad news, it was not by Matisse but a student. I was very disappointed and asked when I could come and pick it up. He said he had a buyer who was willing to pay 125 for the piece. I began to get suspicious and declined. I went later that day to pick it up. I had the darn piece for a year and finally sold it for 15 dollars. I read later that Matisse did do smaller cut outs and gave them to friends. Today I am not sure if mine was real or not. I think it is better not to find out, after all it really did not belong to me, I just saved it from the trash.

greg
