    IMG_1676.jpg IMG_1681.jpg IMG_1687.jpg IMG_1688.jpg Hi all....
I bought this the other day, on the ticket it said Rare Victorian Butlers Trug.
I certainly haven't ever seen one or found another online.
As you will see it was in a bit of a state but I loved the shape and saw the potential.
I polished up the leather (and it is lovely old leather).
Then I re-lined it with this fabric which was part of a Victorian dress, I only had a small piece, only just enough.
All the materials are Victorian, the ribbon hides the bad part, the victorian braid I bought a few weeks ago and it's a perfect match.
I couldn't have found better if I had to go out and look.

    Hope you like it :)

I an pretty sure it is a normal trug converted a long time ago to a rustic sewing basket.

Butler's trays with stands are not uncommon.Typically, the only thing the butler brought to the table was the silver flatware and hollow ware. This was because the obviously valuable silver would be loocked in a strongroom when not in use, with only the butler trusted with the key.

Anything placed in this basket would tend to rattle and jostle together in the bottom, and it is not really large enough to hold more than a tea service.

    Ah ok....
So would a trug covered with leather like this be used outside in the garden?

The fabric I took out of it is definitely Victorian and in the seams which hadn't seen the light of day it shows it was a nice blue fabric once.

Methinks that said 'trug' has had several lives. If the leather is the original, mayhap said butler used it for carrying ice. When the refrigerator took over ice making, her ladyship repurposed the trug with the blue material, (or before that, pink, or whatever). A trug is usually associated with flowers, or garden produce, but this one's leather is not conducive to fresh cut roses or courgettes. Therefore, 'trug,' in this case merely (loosely) refers to the general shape of it.

    Yes the leather is original...
I quite like your thoughts on that too...
And yes the shape would certainly lend itself to being called a trug, that makes sense to me :)
