Thanks! Someone once recommended that I use walnut oil as well, but they said that it's create sort of a shellac-like film on the mold, which causes me some concern.

I suppose it would matter on a butter mold, but doesn't on a salad bowl.

I use fractionated coconut oil on my cutting boards...no scent...protects well...food safe.

As far as prices in Iowa go, I'm at a loss. I live in Missouri and prices at antique auctions and estate sales are "falling into the basement." Maybe Iowa vendors know something we don't know?

In any case, good luck arguing with common sense against people's greed. As someone said above, there are some who would rather have an antiques museum than sell at the market level. I never have understood it, nor do I understand how these people make a living and survive.

The best thing to do is simply to find other places to go.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Cutting boards, salad bowls, butter molds.....anything like that I want to keep preserving I always use Mineral Oil.....doesn't go rancid and no taste or color!! I let it soak in a bit then give it a thorough wiping down. LOVE the look too!!!! I use that for cleaning out ear wax too!!!!! :):):):):) (UNLESS you have a broken ear drum.....then DON'T!!!!)

Oh, I remember the term sweet oil, but I don't know what it was, either.

Probably................olive oil would have been alien and exotic in our tidy little WASP World back then

Found this on a web site talking about treating ear infections:
One home remedy is [IMG]sweet oil, which is made of olive and/or almond oils. This treat has been used for many years in many cultures.

As for pricing, I always find dealers who are out of step with the market. The prices you are quoting sound like those you could get 10 years ago. There is no sense in arguing with or cajoling dealers. You are best to buy on-line where prices will conform more to market reality. Otherwise, there is always that rare find in the bush so to speak (thrift stores, garage sales, etc.). Keep at it.
