I knew, but I can't remember. The design is etched in the metal underneath the clear coating. I believe my Uncle brought it back for my Aunt after WWII

Bev, is guilloche enamel what you were trying to remember?

    Guilloché
(/ɡɪˈloʊʃ/),(or guilloche) is a decorative technique in which a very precise, intricate and repetitive pattern is mechanically engraved into an underlying material via engine turning, which uses a machine of the same name, also called a rose engine lathe. This mechanical technique improved on more time-consuming designs achieved by hand and allowed for greater delicacy, precision, and closeness of line, as well as greater speed.

I used to sell a lot of guilloche jewelry so I knew what it was, but my synapses aren't firing on all cylinders these days.

The Spirit of St. Louis cowl was not "engine turned",it was done with a rod and abrasives in a drill press/hand drill type tool, engine turned is done on a lathe type machine.

The cowl was done with a wooden dowel with lapping compound, abrasive disks, modern Cratex rounds of various diameter and is known as a "jeweled surface" by most machinist. The lathe type of cutting the patterns in metal is known as engine turning.

Maybe just a difference in terms at different era and world location.

It is generally known as this, at least here in the USA, as far as I know. I have actually done this by hand and drill press. :)
I'm a 'car guy' and many cars have this from the factory and hot rods have it, usually, custom.
No matter how it's done this is what we call it. :)

Lovely compact, Spanish theme. Did your uncle travel through Spain? Spain wasn't occupied during WWII, so it wasn't liberated, but there were major ports in Spain and Portugal.

He was in the motor pool and was stationed in Italy, Spain and Morocco. I have bunch of those wall hanging tapestries that people think are very old, a nice pair of Moroccan leather slippers with silver thread embroidery and other stuff.
