Just interesting. Wally was born in 1895, graduated as class president in 1937.
He was 42 when he graduated from HS?? You're sure that Walter isn't another his or another person's son?
Those names ! Cordelia,Amandeline,Iona ! Love them !
Terry, the only Walter Means I can find in the Oglala Rolls of Pine Ridge in the early 1900's was born in 1915, not 1895. And his father was Eugene, not another Walter. Where did the information about being born in 1895 come from?
I thought it was from ancestry.com
That's where I went for my search too. Started with the 1895 birth year plus the location and what I mentioned above is all that came up.
Look at the Indian names!!!
Perhaps kin to Russell Means?
My mother has always loved saying her grandmother's name, Eldora Philena - I am eternally grateful she didn't choose to name me after her (rather fond of her other grandmother's name though, Jennel)...
I went to school with an IONA !
Walter was Russell's father.
I just now read this thread and am finding it very interesting with Cheryl mentioning Russell Means and Terry saying Walter was Russell's father! Russell Means sounded familiar, but couldn't remember from where. After googling the name found Cheryl and Terry already knew who Russell Means was, the noted activist and actor. He was Chingachgook in the movie The Last of the Mohicans and his autobiography was Where White Men Fear to Tread! He was an active member of AIM (American Indian Movement) rising to a leadership role. He was involved and instrumental in protests of the treatment of Native Americans in such activities as the 1969 Alcatraz Occupation (his father Walter Means, of this 1937 yearbook, had led an occupation there a few years earlier), 1970 Thanksgiving take over of the Mayflower II, 1971 takeover of Mt. Rushmore, and the list goes on and on.
Here is Walter "Hank" Means grave:
This article about Russell Means speaks of his father Walter "Hank" Means:
I've driven through parts of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation about 20 years ago while doing the Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore, and the Badlands National Park. Badlands' formations are something else whether in SD, ND, WY, UT, CO, Canada, etc.!
Separate names with a comma.
