Seems to tell a story. Stern man has rescued youth under the blanket, while figure scurries away. Can't tell if figure under blanket is a boy or girl. Looks a bit like Daniel F. Wentworth's work, though I am not sure the signature matches. He was also American so probably even less likely. You might have to have a look under the mat for the rest of the signature.

Interesting thought, didn't see that, does looks like a tucked leg under the blanket

She does look so mournful, was the reason I liked it in the first place

The tiny figure walking away I didn't notice at first either, I think your right that it means something

    Else why would you bother

    very ominous

The painting seems to have taken a dark turn

Which makes me like it even more

Somewhat more interesting than a pastoral landscape

Those oars make for excellent directional devices. One pointing to the man, the other pointing to the scurrying figure. The road and trees guide the eye back to the young figure and the cycle continues.

    Fantastic observations mate

How the heck does someone portray scurrying

    I'm keeping this one

Very good decision to keep it. An interesting and ‘clever’ painting. Also didn’t see the little figure until it was pointed out. Nice detail..

The date doesn’t make sense and the signature looks backwards? I was thinking maybe Wentworth is the place/location. I did
    find a E.S Wentwurth (but I don’t know)

    I also find the large
size of the boat striking. The boat has a ‘commercial’ look to me. Makes me think the man is perhaps a ferryman paid to take people across. The other figure looks like it’s wearing a dress.
She does looks scared (makes one wonder) Good painting for the imagination and all the possible scenarios.

R mate, the size of the boat, intrigued me as well, but it's not an
    unproportional size

Glad you like it, and value your opinion

Good buy. Glad you are keeping it. I definitely like it. But other than that I don’t know much about art..

You don't necessarily have to know anything about art, to appreciate it

Your observations and previous paintings are enough to make me think, you have an eye for it

With blow-up of detail, think retreating figure is elderly woman in red cape with cane. Take a look and see if you agree.

Yeah I agree deb, the scurrying tiny figure is just what our minds are making up

Doesn't make sense in any way that she is related to the scene

I'm not even dead sure that there is something in the blanket
