I got this piece at a barn sale. I'm not sure it was originally a brooch but it has a pin glued to the back of it now.

It is about 2" across. It looks like some pieces of some sort of clay were cut and/or molded, smooshed together, crimped around the edges like an amateur pie crust, then baked. It is extremely rough and porous, but definitely fired.

    Any ideas?

It may be copying a sculptural work, or inspired by a painting. I'm thinking it is impressed from a mold rather than carved. But could be wrong. These are just first thoughts, don't really know.

I think it is a combination of molding and cutting.

It looks like studio pottery clay and it looks good enough to eat. Like a crispy brown cookie! Otherwise I know nothing.

It's very appealing though and I wonder if it's a one-of-a-kind, one time art project or a studio potter's offerings made in multiples.

Oh, it does! I hadn't thought of that.

I think Fig is on to something. I just searched "architectural sculpture famous churches cherubs" and came up with with several groups of three little cherub heads arranged together in sculptures. And a few candidates for the larger cherub that seems to be on OverWatch of the smaller three.

The only way I can search images with this Android phone is through a built-in program called Lens, which takes away my ability to make bookmarks and links, so I come back empty-handed. I have to get an unGoogled phone, I despise this thing but it's better than nothing I guess.

Or maybe it was something an older child made in Sunday School.
