Looks like a plumb bob is my best guess but I don't thinkmit is, has small metal discs of various weights with it that fit on the end loosely, oh and hi again! It's been awhile I know.

I think it's a hydrometer, with weights for liquids of various viscosity.

Precision tool. To make something verticale straight. What we nowadays do with infrared gear. Hang it on a rope.
Sorry, i don't know the right word.

In early days one measured with ropes. Straighten, but even big angles can be made like that. The perfectly designed piramides are made like that.

    I think its a Pendulum.
The various weights would make the swing shorter.

CluelessFarmBoy said Plumb boy before i new what that was :banghead:
But Plumb gave me the idea of weight, why i rejected hydrometer.:inpain:
A hydrometer has to float, so can't have serieus weight (what i thought).

Now my question @CluelessFarmBoy is. Has this thing weight, or can it float??

Not sure if it floats but I bet it does, it is very lightweight, I'd test it but it's at my friends house.

It was, a very old farmstead, we found it in an old wood toolbox/chest with antique wood planers, wrenches, clamps and other tools, almost all of the tools were construction and woodworking tools that would have been current for building houses and barns back when his house was built so he is convinced it is an architectural tool.

Thats it, there no mistaking it for anything else, that's a fancier version and complete but it's dead on, thank you!

The weights though would fall off unless there's something missing that holds them on

the weights are notched the fit over square bar as long as the bar did not turn up side down the weights would stay on. The brass ball is probably hallow so it will float and that is why it is so protected in both cases since it would easily be crushed or dented.
