I've seen a double sided grapefruit tool with a spoon on one side and a knife on the other but I doubt that is what this is for.:sorry::)

For applying pressure with your thumb. Mom's cooking skills weren't so good.

You didn't show a picture of how the "spoon" is attached to the "knife" part. Is it all one stamped metal part or is the spoon welded/braized to the knife part? If somehow welded or actually braized I would suspect a home made item for whatever purpose the maker used it for would never be known exactly.

An egg and watermelon race spoon? Keep the egg balanced on the spoon while cutting the watermelon. He who cuts up the most without smashing the egg wins?
OK maybe not, but it's all I can think of.

Hmmm - passionfruit knife? Cut it in half with one side and scoop with the other? They're small enough to make it work.

If there ever really was a torture instrument known as an "eyeball gouge" maybe this is one. Now please continue eating your poached egg, and I'll go to my room.

The blade shape has that "wood carver / whittler" look to it and the thumb shape rest would make sense.

Boy, it sure looks like it could be used for shucking oysters ... but I can't find any examples to support this guess.

If you tried to use it to press down on the knife, your index finger would be right on the blade, so that doesn't really work.

Well, yeah ... there's that. One would need a really loooong (and strong) thumb.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Looks kind of like you get the blade started into something, then for extra pressure, knife handle in one hand and corner of heel of palm into the "spoon"......but what shell fish would be that hard to open???? Then again....maybe not for shellfish at all.......IDK!!!!! Sure looks sturdy enough....
