WOW! Just curious but will you share the listing for it once listed so we can follow the progress? Are you doing a buy it now or true ebay auction? Should be fun!

All my sales start at 99p and run for ten days.

@John Brassey You have a good eye for quality, and I wish you luck on eBay with this piece. I'm sure quite a few 'collectors' will place their bids accordingly.

Foolhardy maybe but it's worked for me for 20 years. Stuff finds what it's worth. It's no good kidding myself if I've bought badly and anyway it keeps the cash going for buying which is what I like more than selling. I've sold some stuff for 99p and Free Shipping (which I always offer to UK buyers) and the shipping has cost me £5! On the whole it sells for a profit. I've only resurrected the buying and selling with a. vengeance during lockdown. For the last few years it's just been a few items a month.

I imagine it all levels out at the of the day. Losing on some but winning on many. I always offer free shipping within the UK too, but I tend to list items at attractive BIN prices with Make An Offer etc. Its each to their own in this game! Whatever works best for you.

i thought of the make an offer idea about twelve years ago for a website to compete with eBay. I bought the rights to "makemeyouroffer.com" but didn't have the funds to risk as the site developers wanted £8k. The eBay offers work exactly how my site was going to work and I sometimes wonder if my IT consultants pitched it to eBay. Never mind. It works really well for me buying although sometimes sales are stopped once I've made an offer.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least! I had a similar occurrence with Falsebook! They were actually stealing my artwork, selling it in Italy, and making a small fortune. It's futile and pointless taking them on with lawsuits too. Not even the financial ombudsmen or the FBI & CIA combined can touch them, and don't start me off with PlayFoul, either. Crooks, the lot of 'em. Modern-day mafia.

That is an interesting find, not something I have come across before. It does seem very odd shipping English ceramics for decoration in Canton. Out of interest are the enamels flat, or are they as you normally find on Canton ware and the texture just doesn't show? Also are the enamels simply clobbered or fired into the surface (they appear in very good order if they are clobbered)?

I don't actually have it yet. It is due to be delivered tomorrow. I think that the enamels are as you normally find on Canton ware. Will let you know for sure when it arrives.

John, what a fascinating piece and an interesting puzzle. I was going to suggest Po Hing but I see all has already been revealed.

John can you tell us what was the most challenging part of the research? Usually there is always some trick or some odd clue that winds up leading to a whole chain of events that solves the mystery. Was it hard to find examples or what? very fascinating.

I spotted it advertised on Facebook as an English porcelain jug with Chinese decoration and thought that was odd.

I could just make out a few letters from the obscured mark in the pics and after a while came up with Challinor

I then Googled Challinor and famille rose and the V&A piece turned up.

From then I followed up the V&A references and was fortunate to have a friend with a copy of the book mentioned .

    That’s about it.

The listing goes live soon . I think it’s a fabulous rarity but Bonhams didn’t think it exciting enough to put in their sale so maybe it won’t do that well. Will know in ten days. Almost tempted to keep it as it’s so unusual.
Not offering overseas shipping might reduce the price but it will be prohibitive
