Featured What is this small Mexican silver item

I'm wondering if anyone know what this item is please? It's stamped Mexican and is silver. Looks vintage. What was it before now?? 4.5cm high. The only thing I can think of is a pin cushion?

I think it's a salt (or pepper) shaker. See if the base unscrews.

Thank you very much for your help. The base unscrews! I'm absolutely floored, the months I've had it on my desk wondering what it is. My sister (she was also a forum member) sent it to me, along with with other treasures, before she passed away. Only trouble is now I need to find a matching one, she'd have been so delighted to see this thread! Although that screw thing at the top is still a mystery - part of a cactus blossom I guess

 

Or you can use it for salt and pair it with an attractive pepper grinder.

You could also use it as a pepper shaker & pair it with a crystal salt dish with a sterling spoon of course.

This is a fantastic idea. I went to ebay and typed in salt dish and the first thing that came up was a silver tray my sister also sent me - which I was using as an earrings dish - unbelievable - set is almost complete - now just need to clean them up and a small spoon.
