Featured What style, where made, & how old is this buffet/sideboard?

    The person who I got it from said it was at least as old as the 1840s...

    It has several kinds of veneer. It has brass decorations, including brass dolphins that hold up the upper section. It has a mirror along the back as well as mirrors in the back of the upper cabinets.

    Unfortunately, I only saw it briefly when I agreed to buy it. It was subsequently picked up by DH and transported to a fiend's booth in another town where I thought it would get better exposure and sell faster. DH took lots of photos for me once it was set up there, but they didn't help me much.

    I have no idea what style to call this, and am not confident about the date I was given. Can anyone help?

    I'll ask if they replaced the marble...

    That tummy belongs to my friend. I don't think I'll tell him. He'd be embarrassed. :eek::oops:

    Hi Book, That is awesome. The veneer looks similar to a little table i have.

    I'd call it an Art Nouveau buffet ca. 1900 - 1910. Probably made in France. Love the ormolu mounts and dolphin supports. Nice parquetry as well. I believe the marble is replacement. Value in the U.S. Midwest would be somewhere around $1K, depending on the day and the venue.

    Thanks Ghopper.
    $1,000 is what we are hoping to get for it.

    I asked about the marble - it is the same marble that was there when they bought it - but that was only 20 years ago so who knows?

    I do not see anything French art nouveau on this item. wrong roof, wrong dolphins and cornucopiae, wrong curved frame for the marble.

    nearest to antique I come is an Italian ottocento piece influenced by French Empire/Napoleon III.
    when looking at the sawcutting for the dovetails and the rather fresh looking wood of the drawers it could even be 1930s to 1950s.

    I agree, not Art Nouveau. It has evolved from French Empire, but not in a way I can match with a style.
    My guess would be a very nicely made Italian repro, maybe custom made in the early to mid 20th century.
