What was this little case used for?

I think it is chrome with a machine tooled design. It is only 3" long and 2" wide with clips inside that hold something. It is only 3/8" high when closed. I thought originally a cigarette case or to hold business cards but it is too small. It is monogramed. The inside has some kind of plastic protector that does not appear to be removeable. Has anyone seen something like this case? Google searches are turning up cigarette cases but they are all bigger than this one. Any help with identification would be very appreciated.

I believe it IS a cigarette case...from the days when they didn't have filters, cork tips, extended length & etc.
Gauloises in France are one possibility, an' Lucky Strikes & Chesterfields in the US.
There are many others that would have comfortably fit into that sweet case.

    Definitely a ciggie case.

Thank you. Per your suggestions I did a search on cig sizes and found that unfiltered, up to the 1950's were 68-70 mm long which translates to about 2 3/4 inches which would indeed fit in the little case. A big thank you to all for your suggestions, pointing me in the right direction and solving my puzzle. Hope you all have a good weekend.

I have louped it all over, no marks that I could find. I was hoping I would find a mark but so far, nada.

nicer than a lot of base metal cases I've seen.
if it were silver ,,you might also see marks on the two spring loaded arms meant to keep the smokes from flying out of the case when opened.
