What was this pottery jar used for? Is there a name for this type of decoration?

    Picked this up today and thought it looked cool, the lid has some previous repaired damage but you really cant notice it when it's on. What type of decorating is this, is it a ginger jar? Also it looks like there is a mark under the glaze but as you can see ,it has been consumed by it. Stands 5 inches, about 6 inches across lid is 3.5 inches and bottom is 3.5 inches as well.[​IMG] [​IMG] [​IMG] [​IMG] [​IMG] [​IMG]
