Any ideas what went inside this case? 11" x 7" x 8" tall leather with metal edges and cushioning inside. I thought camera but there are imprints of round feet in the bottom cushion and I don't recall seeing a camera with feet. Any idea on age? Thank you.

I know I won't be right but it looks like a case to hold a 6/12 volt car battery!

There is some tape residue on the top of the box and it looks like it has printing on it.

Is that a removable insulator sleeve in the box or is it an attached part of the box?

The foam is attached to the box.

Might you be able to get a pencil tracing from these?
You'd probably have to do it very lightly.

Probably for some kind of scientific or trade instrument that needed protection and portability when not in use. There are any number of such that could fit in there but impossible to know without more information.

I tried doing a rubbing before I posted this but the writing doesn't have any depth or height, it is just left in the tape residue. Odd.

In the middle part I see LET possibly 6C or 8C could be a G.

Googling Wassman Wawman and some other combinations, did not find anything that I could relate this to.

Last night I searched antique and scientific equipment on ebay but did not have any luck finding a case that looked similar. It's a great looking case even if I don't find out what it was used for but now, my curiosity won't let me stop looking.

untitled.png I kind of agree with cluttered. I've seen several magic lanterns in cases. The pieces come apart and they have four feet. Here's an image of one outside of a box.

I think magic lantern is a strong possibility. Thank you.
