It measures 9" at its widest and 5-3/4" height. What type of metal it is I have no idea, I would say silver but it is not stamped nor is it signed. What would be the easiest way to find out if it is silver or not. Thanks in advance. clam1.jpg clam1.jpg clam2.jpg clam1.jpg clam2.jpg

Now that's my kind of weird. Almost looks like one of those colored powder containers they use for ceremonies in India. Do the top shells open up?

Is it silver? Looks more like some kind of spelter with lots of zinc in it to me. If you want to test it there are lots of cheap silver test kits on eBoo that you can use.
Best to wait for the experts.

    Cheers

Are there holes in each shell?
I suspect it's the base to a compote or similar.
    Not silver or silver plate.
Most likely pewter or pot metal alloy with coating.

It doesn't look like it would sit flat.
So if upside down, maybe it attaches to a base rather than it being a base.

Is the big shell open like a shallow bowl?

Looks like the armature rods that are vertical in photo have slipped a bit since they stick out the bottom and don’t extend into the hole(s) on top that are clearly there for the rods.

This is 1/2 of a set of bookends. I think they were intended to sit in a position rotated 90 degrees CW from that shown in the photos. The large shell now on bottom is the one that presses on the end book. Do you live in Florida or another place with beaches?

Yes, south Texas to be exact. Yes, it's like a bowl. No, it only has holes in 3 of them, out of four. Doubt its a book stand, way too lite. Thanks.
