    Bought this little guy for $1 at a thrift store. It was really dirty but it cleaned up pretty well but that's when I noticed some spots where paint was missing. I'm not familiar with RD but the black paint also seems "thin", showing lighter areas where the base color is showing through. See photos. Is it worth touching up? I'm not a collector and would plan on selling this online. Thanks for any suggestions!

    PS Can anyone date this based on the maker's mark?

    you're selling....leave it alone...
    let the buyer do it...

    if you touch it up......and don't reveal that you did.....:shifty:

    if you touch it up......and do reveal that you did.......the buyer won't know how much is no longer original......and the price will suffer !!!;)

    Thanks! I had no intent of not disclosing a repair... I value my 100% rating and believe strongly in the Golden Rule. But what you said about the latter option makes perfect sense and is why a reached out for suggestions. As far as the paint seeming "thin", is that normal with Royal Doulton's? The only other piece I have is an elegant figurine that is matte black and from the early 80's. Not a good comparison.

    Surely it is glaze, not paint? However patchy, that is presumably how it came out of the kiln.

    Are you sure those arent paint spots that may be tough to get off? I was into Royal Doulton for years,and Ive never seen that happen before.

    This site talks about how to date Doulton figurines. It just happens to show one like yours with the "15" to the right of the mark and they say that it dates to 1942. (they started adding number in 1927 and so they say 1927 + 15 =1942)

    This was made at the height of the Blitz. Sometimes, the glaze quality of wartime Doulton is a bit off. Leave it alone.

    Pretty certain. I was thinking it was paint as well but it feels indented and not raised running across it with a fingernail.

    Thank you for that info. It helped me date some "Arcadia" plates I found as well. Wish they were more in demand.
