Apart from junk etc. what is the name for these vases? Think I have seen
a similar style in Japanese vases but can't for the life of me remember.
Only have the auction picture to go on at the moment but they feel and
sound like thin sheet metal possibly tin and are hand painted. Largest is
about 30cm high and although the tops look like they have wooden stoppers
it's just painted metal and they are open. Quite a bit of “patina” on them and they
are unlikely to be recent but I suspect they are a touristy item. There are no marks underneath. Anyone ID similar vases??
    Cheers

Tole is the word you're thinking of. And they do appear to be a recent Chinese decorative import.

Tole – That's the word. Found an exact shape match at 1stdibs who claim theirs are 19th century Indian and worth a fortune as usual.

found one on pinterest that was vaguely close shape match

I think I need more key words in the search parameter to do any better.
Anyway got some better pictures. The bottom of these seems to have had
a gold paint job that has been over painted black at some stage as the gold is
much brighter in the chipped areas. Construction of the neck and lip of these can be
easily seen in one of the photos as well as some of the internal rust.
I was tempted to jump on the “made yesterday in China” bandwagon but on closer
inspection I'm not so sure now.

    Data
    16cm High 13cm Round 0.24Kg
    22cm High 17cm Round 0.46Kg
    26.5cm High 20.5cm Round 0.6Kg

    Cheers
