Just picked up this wheeled cow toy as I loved the look of it. Appears to be papier mache and, though it’s in pretty rough condition, I think I can fix it up. Any ideas about the maker, or age? “Feels” like a true antique to me but I’m not sure.
Is this the same as yours? IT IS 10" LONG. APPROX. 7 1/2" TALL. HEAD IS TO MOVE FROM SIDE TO SIDE WHEN PULLED. LG ANTIQUE HIDE COVERED PAPER PAPIER MACHE COW PULL TOY GLASS EYES MOVING HEAD | eBay
Thanks! Similar, but not the same. My cow looks a little different and has a wheel on each foot, while the one in your link is mounted to a wheeled plank of wood, like a skateboard.
how about this one Antique Dolls and Toys of LEGO - Session 3: 1074 German Pull-Toy Cow with "Moo" Bellows and Milkmaid Doll (theriaults.com)
Take that Steiff back. Not the same wheel. I'm just a curious researcher, not an expert. You need our toy experts.
That's a beautifully sculpted little cow ! By the way-what does that little lever do coming out of the teat-does it wag the tail, and what are the horns & eyes made out of ? Great find.
Thanks! Lever doesn’t do anything, just seems to be one of what were four teats. Eyes are glass, horns wood.
I’ve been trying to figure out the breed of cattle that this toy is meant to represent. The best match I’ve found in body shape, head shape, colouration, etc. is an old German breed called Murnau- Werdenfels, from Bavaria, a breed that is almost extinct today with fewer than 150 animals remaining. If so, more support to this toy having been made in Germany.
