I agree. Geisha is a profession, not a name for a Japanese woman.
The doll Debora posted seems to be of a geisha, but the best clue is at the back.

The katana could be original to your doll, in which case she represents an onna-musha, a female samurai. The fact that the katana is out of proportion is never an issue with costume dolls.;)

The text probably says what she is meant to be.

I don't see how with the way her hands and arms are positioned that she could hold it in a position that would be correct orientation.
The cord with tassels is obviously added.
I think the musicians theory seems more logical?

It would be, but on the other hand, many costume dolls are made as generic dolls, and only their dress, hairstyle and attributes point to a specific profession.
Are her arms rigid, or can you bend them?

Very rigid. I think she has a metal frame body.

That means a generic shaped doll. Which doesn't necessarily mean the katana was hers to begin with.;)

Great! I was looking for a reasonable explanation as to taking it away from her.
@kyratango an instrument made of Burl wood, Ivory, and Sterling thread would be nice lol.

She put the laughing emoji but she's not kidding. Wouldn't be surprised if she could do it with aluminum foil alone.

Katana with no tassels. If this is the correct orientation it would hang on the back of the left shoulder blade of the Samurai.

It really doesn't matter much what she is holding as long as it is Japanese and shows off those awesome fingers

Yes one of my only Japanese Sterling pieces. I have three with different handle tips. This one is a pagoda.
