Where are these clay people from?

I wonder if anyone has seen something like this before..... Two clay people, the one in back seems to be fixing the hair of the other person. Their clothing is very thin and worn. The person at the estate sale said their father had spent time in Afghanistan many years ago and brought many things back with him to the US, but knew nothing about this piece. The figures are between 4 and 5" high and the wooden stand is crudely made. Any thoughts as to age and origin? Thanks. Also, let me wish the mothers here an early Happy Mother's Day here and around the world. I hope you are 'Queen For A Day' tomorrow!
