Am I correct in thinking that this is a valuable piece ??? Fingers crossed.

 

Why do you think it should be valuable? I see no markings that would indicate it is made of either silver or gold.

Curious. What led you to identifying this piece as by Wilhelm Hunt Diederich?

Here's a link to a page with the HD mark. Diederich only made "a small amount of silver (quoted from that page,) And since he was working in the period after sterling silver became commonly available in the US, if this item was made of silver it would be very likely that it would be so marked, which it is not.

Just a very quick look online might suggest that the design is "old fashioned" for Diederich.

And yes I am going to pull it until I know how much it is really worth.

 

It is all pierced by hand.

 

I pulled auction. If anyone can help on a true value would appreciate it and would compensate with finders fee if a successful sale happened.

 

I have not checked the metal as one of my acids leaked in bag so I discarded it. In my auction I showed the weight. It was 79.6 grams I think 2.55 Troy oz. Pretty sure it is silver. Rubbed it toll my finger was on fire and no smell like with plated.

 

Thinking its early in his career or end of it. As the piercing is not so perfect. But being it is a strainer leads me to think early. Maybe he made it for his mother No need for mark then. The hallmark spot on and I think with its obvious age it would not be not have been counterfeited.

 

The weight has nothing to do with whether it's silver. Get it tested.

 

I was initially skeptical but... It is consistent with his work as an animalier and -- if the mark is correct -- could be an early evolutionary piece before his work became so stylized. This would be another example.

Silver is heavier than most metals weight has everything to do with it being silver. If its not lead not gold not stainless steel not pewter not iron. Its usually silver.

 

Have you found info about what metals he worked in primarily, Debora?
