"Perhaps the one iconic example of American Frisian carving is this New Jersey spoon rack. This yellow poplar example is dated 1727 and descended in a Bergen County family. It brought a staggering $42,000. USD in 2011"

    Beautiful pieces!

I would imagine that if the owner of the repurposed piece was thought to be a witch, that it was a long time ago. A name would help. It actually sounds more like a marketing ploy :)

I’ll get some more photos of the back. It’s very light weight whatever it is. To be honest I’m not familiar with poplar. I’ll have to google it’s defining characteristics.

I’ll ask next time I’m there. I was already purchasing it at a low price from a thrift store so I don’t think it was marketing per say. You never know though! I did temporarily turn into a toad last night unexpectedly so it could be.

If you’re expecting it then it’s just like ugh “I’m a toad”. When you’re not it can be alarming!!!

Here are some better photos of the reverse. Based on 3 minutes of googling and a lifetime of inexperience I’ll say it looks like Tulip Poplar...?

That last photo in first reply is definitely not tulip poplar ;). This is the one I meant to include.

    LOL, It happens!

    LOL
Hmmm, in looking at new photos, no, does not look like tulip poplar, it's to open grained, like an oak. I was going mostly on the color in first photos
I am now thinking it is from the old country, Netherlands
