Hinge and tiny wood screws look newer, and homemade probably but a very talented wood craftsman. Very nice finish! The inside corner braces are usually not of mass produced items and the black lines across the tops of them show that they were hand sanded on a disc sander. Beautiful piece!

Looks like a tea caddy box from one of the wood working magazines/books.

Yes, someone took very good care of making it. It’s a good looking piece but I guess being from unknown artist it has just a moderate value?

By the way, type of wood used?

It could be afzelia burl, hard to say since there are many burl woods.

The maker of this piece is a wonderful 'artist' "known or not" .. I think folks would be willing to pay a good price for it. I never did understand the "known artist" thing .. if a piece is lovely then the maker is a great artist regardless. Anyway .. just my take on things ... Joy.

I've seen very similar in galleries in Mendocino. Along with exquisite furniture. Very buyable :)

I collect, and buy/sell a lot of boxes - this one is definitely an "artist made" box with nice inset burl wood, with a specific purpose but I can't tell what. Usually there is a paper insert about the artist, even when I find a vintage one the original owner usually would have saved the paper insert card inside box. You can find these for sale at artist co-op stores, sometimes at county or state fairs they are on display in the hand-arts category, and available for sale at end of fair.

I don't think it would be a tea Caddy. I would call it a Men's accessory box for holding tie clips, cufflinks watches etc.....
