Wooden Mask from where?

    Hi,
    I bought two masks from the fleet market but do not know the origin.

    I'd say Papua New Guinea, Tambunum (various spellings) Village, based on the type of cowrie shells used, the tusks, the style of the nose carving, and the fact that The Artifacts and Crafts of Papua New Guinea shows a very similar mask (but without the little faces on the top) with the rounded mouth (on your second mask) featured as #16 on page 5. The mask shown also has the slanted eyes of your first mask.

    I also agree that they are fairly recent, and of decorative value only.
