The blotchiness is surface corrosion and oxidation of the zinc. Luckily, most of that happened on the base. I cleaned and scrubbed a few times. Some surfaces were pimply, so, out came very fine sandpaper and a gentle hand to flatten those protrusions. That smoothed it without any new issues. Next was the airbrush and Testors model paint.
