Next from my grandfather's little box are 2 more pieces about which I am rather curious. The first one I read as "Bordeaux", before I looked more closely and saw that it says "Doadeaux". Perhaps just an engraver's error?

I believe the pin is brass, perhaps with silver plating on the wings(?)

The second item is a little 1" emblem - just a thin bit of brass with no means of attaching it to anything. Might anyone know anything about it?

    Any input is greatly appreciated!

Sure does look like that, Smallaxe! Curious & curiouser... I thought it resembled something from a plane!

Well, Pop was neither a flier nor in WWII, so perhaps he added it to the box at a later time. Thanks for the info!

Just wondering - can't tell from photo. Could it be D. Cadeaux? I went to school with some kids named Cadeaux. It's a typical French name.

    Thanks for the idea, Bev.

I just checked with my loupe again. It's definitely a D then an O. No spaces, no periods.

The third letter does seem to be an A, but it maybe could be a too-straight, badly shaped R...

    Thanks, Holly.

Well, that puts it back into the right time frame for my grandfather, anyway. Still, he worked in ground transportation/mechanics/truck repair. As far as I know, he never had anything to do with air service. Nonetheless, maybe there was some connection!

Can't help but wonder if it was supposed to be Bordeaux.

My thoughts, exactly, Bev! In my first post, I said:

Like everything in the military they need support from various other specialties. The pin looks like the brass ribbon/banner was added and the pin hardware on the back is not original also.

I believe you're absolutely right about that. You can see on the back where the ribbon part was pinned on, and the pin assembly - especially the "C" hook - seems quite primitive:
