Rummaging around in my hoard of jewellery I came across these two brooches - I'd completely forgotten I even had them!
The first one looks like a particularly unappetising cabbage to me! It's quite large - I think the leaves may be celluloid and there is a pale green, slightly pearlised bead in the centre.
The second, in fairness, is not quite as ugly! I assume it's a sprig of lily of the valley and I think it must also be celluloid. I have no real idea of age for either of them - 30s/40s/50s?

German brooches often seem to have those angled pins on the back.
I rather like the lily of the valley. I have no idea about date but it makes me think of war time.

    I have seen uglier brooches.;)
I believe those boomerang pin constructions are 1950s.

Yes, I think you may be right - I might wear it on my dress for a D-Day anniversary event in June.

Thank you - I can see that "cabbagey" brooch as 50s now!

It’s not lily of the valley, those have bell shaped flowers held on a single arching stem. It’s one of the arum types, a zantedeschia. The wide spathe leaf and that big stamen are a clue too.

OK, I will back down on the lily of the valley brooch being ugly. In fact the more I look at it the nicer it seems! But, oh my - the "cabbage' brooch is still a shocker in my opinion!

Thank you. I knew the flowers were the wrong shape but just assumed it was a bad representation of Lof the V or possibly made by someone who had never seen the real thing!

I hope you aren’t referring to the Tokyo Sewerage Brooch :shifty:….
I’ve just remembered it’s a pendant so obviously not

As I say often, china painters and some jewellery makers aren’t known for their grasp of botany.

I noticed Christmasjoy and Jivvy also posted in that thread. Of course they did.;) I miss them.

I’ve just reread it sniggering like a kid at the back of a classroom. Antiquers really rose to the occasion that time. Or sunk to the depths is possibly more accurate…
I thought the same thing. Christmas Joy was as lovely as her name and Jivvy is very sadly missed, she was very entertaining and fun.
