Whitby Jet Necklace set?

    I have 2 matching necklaces, one smaller than the other, that are extremely light and feel like plastic but the clasp is 9 Kt gold? They both have some chips off the edges. The clasp on one has a 395 + 9k + what looks like a crown, the other has 395. How can I truly confirm this Whitby Jet and what year? Both together weigh 38 grams.

    Photos would help.
    One test for Jet is to draw a line with it on a piece of white printing paper.
    The line should be brown if Jet.

    Are you sure the numbers are not 375 which means 37.5% gold purity for 9k

    Welcome. Yes, we definitely need photos. You may need to downsize them to meet the site's requirements.

    Your description of light weight, feels like plastic, chipped at edges is very consistent with jet, as is the use of gold for the clasps, but we really do need to see.

    I found this interesting to read, even though it uses a lot of vocabulary specific to mining/geology I did not fully understand.
